NILET continues with Teacher Training for Second Language Teachers

5 more batches of Sinhala/Tamil Second Language Teachers from all provinces join the training course

In September, the National Institute of Language Education and Training (NILET) commenced the second series of five-day training programmes for Sinhala and Tamil Second Language Teachers. Designed to enhance the capacity of second language teachers teaching Sinhala and Tamil, the trainings were attended by five more batches of teachers, representing all the provinces of Sri Lanka. The training of more batches of Second Language Teachers is scheduled for October.

Conducted online, the trainings covered areas such as second language training methodology, best practices on how to apply these methodologies to subject knowledge, methodology for language acquisition and learning and the practical aspects pertaining to usage and practice of Second Language.

To date 278 Sinhala and Tamil Second Language Teachers have followed the NILET online teacher training programmes. By conducting such training programmes NILET ensures government servants increased access to second language learning. Mandated with the provision of quality training of the Sinhala, Tamil and English languages NILET plays an integral role in promoting the bilingual nature of our country. These training programs were originally conceptualized as residential courses. Pivoting to online delivery reflects NILET’s commitment to fulfill its mandate despite the restrictions posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. NLEAP will continue to work very closely with NILET, supporting the critical role it plays in enhancing the ability of the government to improve the services for the citizens of different communities.
