Strengthening the capacity of the Judiciary System to provide Bi-lingual services to their Public

Three Courts in the Nuwara Eliya District join the Language Planning Facilitation Programme.

Ensuring that the public can obtain legal services in the language of their choice is critical to the effectiveness of any national justice system. This is why ensuring the participation of the judiciary system in the Language Planning Process was critical to the National Languages Division of the Ministry of Public Services, Provincial Councils and Local Government. Therefore, it was very encouraging when three courts from the Nuwara Eliya district joined in a recently concluded Language Planning Facilitation Workshop ; the Hatton Magistrate Court, the District Court Hatton and the Labour Tribunal-  Nuwara Eliya. Also joining in were representatives from the Divisional Secretariat Offices  of Kotmale, Walapane and Hanguranketha. These six institutions now join 68 other Sub National Institutions that underwent the same Language Planning Facilitation programme in Q1 of 2021.

NLEAP continues to support the NLD with the required technical assistance to improve the capacity of key Government Institutions to deliver public services in both official languages (Sinhala and Tamil). Enhancing the Language Planning Capacity of Public Service Institutions at national and provincial levels is an integral component of the Strategy Framework for the Implementation of Official Languages Policy (SFI OLP).
